Discover Iowa’s Native Bees and Help Protect Pollinators at Central Park This Summer!

posted on 6/12/26

Summer is buzzing with opportunities to explore the fascinating world of Iowa’s native bees at the Central Park Nature Center! Jones County Conservation invites residents of all ages to join hands-on events designed to educate, inspire, and make a difference in local pollinator populations.

Central Park Bumble Bee Survey
Join citizen scientists and nature enthusiasts on June 27, July 18, and August 29 from 3–5 PM for the 2026 Central Park Bumble Bee Survey. Participants will learn about native bumble bees, discover the mission of the Iowa Bumble Bee Atlas, and help record sightings to support conservation efforts right here in Central Park.

Native Bees & Bee Hotel Workshop
Want to welcome pollinators to your own backyard? On Saturday, June 20 at 1 PM, Naturalist Intern Faith Hansen will lead a hands-on workshop to explore Iowa’s native bees. Participants will learn bee-friendly tips and build a solitary bee box—also known as a “bee hotel”—to take home. Fee: $10 per box (one per family).  Click here to register for this event.

Bees are essential to our environment, but many species are in decline.   Citizen Science opportunities like the bumble bee survey are a fun way to learn about local pollinators and actively contribute to conservation.
