Secondary Roads

This page has been created to help Jones County residents, property owners and travelers more easily obtain information regarding road closings, construction projects and policies as well as to provide commonly used forms and maps.

Maintenance Duties

The Secondary Road Department maintains nearly 860 miles of roads.   Approximately 170 miles of the system is hard surfaced (PCC, Asphalt, Seal Coat) and the remaining miles either has a granular or earth surface.  It is also responsible for everything within the road right-of-way, including thousands of drainage structures that cross and parallel these roads including 175 bridges over twenty feet long.  The County is divided into ten maintenance districts which provide a number of services.  Some of the services that are provided include: snow removal, drainage maintenance, blading, roadside management and traffic control.

Engineering Duties

The Engineer's Office carries out the design, inspection and contract administration of the secondary road system.  It provides an annual budget and five year construction program that identifies how the county will be spending its funding on the county roads.

Road Closures & Construction

County Road E34 Road Closure and Construction Update:

Construction continues on our County Road E34 resurfacing project this week.  The grading contractor has completed the dirt work at the Fish House Road intersection.  Mainline paving began on August the 29th.  The paving will be accomplished one lane at a time and two lifts of new asphalt will be placed.  A portion of one lane will be closed while paving with flaggers and use of a pilot car to keep traffic and workers safe.

The project was let on December 20, 2022 and was awarded to Mathy Construction Company of Dubuque for $1.5 million.  The contract specifies that the contractor will have 50 working days to complete the specified work once started.  The first phase of this project is to lengthen the curve along CO RD E34 at the Fish House Road intersection.  In order to construct the new curve, a portion of the roadway will need to be closed to traffic.  The road will be closed to through traffic during construction.  A detour will be provided, and signs will be erected to mark the detour route (See HERE).  Local access to properties will remain open during the entirety of the project and businesses will remain open.
