Join us for Phenology Fun during our March Early Out Wednesdays. Find out what phenology is. After a short introduction to phenology we'll go on a short phenology hike to take notice of seasonal phenology cues we can observe. Once back at the Nature Center we'll get creative with paint and colored pencils to create our own phenology wheels based on our outdoor observations.

Calling all wildlife watchers! The Iowa DNR will be partnering with Jones County Conservation to host a Bald Eagle Nest Monitoring Training workshop for people that are interested in getting involved. There are over 600 bald eagle pairs nesting in Iowa and volunteers are needed to help track the nests. Prospective nest monitors must attend a training workshop before getting involved.
The workshop will be held at the Central Park Nature Center on March 23rd from 12:30 to 4:00. Most of the workshop will be classroom based but we will visit an eagle nest. To participate as a nest monitor you must have a pair of binoculars and it is helpful to have a spotting scope.
Community science volunteers have been helping to monitor Iowa’s eagle population since 2006. Workshop participants will learn about this program and how to get involved and monitor a nest in their area of the state. In 2023, volunteer nest monitors collected data on roughly 329 nests!
In 2024, nest monitors are particularly needed in the following counties: Allamakee, Clayton, Delaware, Floyd, Henry, Jones, Lucas and Winneshiek Counties; but interested people anywhere in the state are welcome. We will try to match you up with a nest near your home base. The time commitment for conducting the survey and submitting data is roughly 6 hours total between March and July each year and will require multiple visits to a nest.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants and a $10.00 fee is required. Registration will close on March 16 at 5 pm or whenever the 15-person workshop limit has been reached. Direct questions and local registration requests to Stephanie Shepherd at vwmp@dnr.iowa.gov or 515-230-6599. (Online registrations are already full - a limited number of slots are still available for local eastern Iowa residents.)
