Join the OWLS (Older Wiser Livlier souls) members and Jackson, Jones, and Dubuque CCB staff for a fun and informative tour of the Devonian Fossil Gorge near Iowa City. Pre-dating the age of the dinosaurs, the Devonian Fossil Gorge is over 375 million years old and is a fascinating glimpse of Iowa’s prehistoric past. Exposed during the Great Flood of 1993 at Coralville Lake, then again during the floods of 2008 the fossils and limestone bedrock of the Devonian Fossil Gorge date back almost 200 million years before the dinosaurs! You'll be able to walk on this exposed ancient seabed and touch once alive ancient sea life. Click here to watch a short video on how the gorge was formed. Registration is required for this program. Please register by August 3rd by contacting jstroyan@jacksoncountyiowa.gov or calling (563)652-3783. This event is free. Participants should bring water and a sack lunch or snack. Please note - the fossil gorge itself has little shade - sunscreen and hats are recommended.
